INTERVIEW BY KELSEY ROSE

OAKLAND RESIDENT, SFAI STUDENT AND MIAMI NATIVE JUANCY MATOS AND I TALKED AT LENGTH ABOUT THE ARTWORLD AT LARGE AND MORE SPECIFICALLY IN THE BAY AREA- GOING FROM SHOW TO SHOW AND RELATING ON HOW ART SHOULD BE EXCITING. LIKE, WHERE ARE THE GUTS?

J:I THINK ART HAS LOST ALOT OF ITS VALUE AS A REPRESENTATION OF CULTURE AND WE HAVE TO TAKE ART SERIOUSLY AND MAKE IT IMPORTANT AGAIN.

K: AND WHAT WERE YOU SAYING PREVIOUSLY ABOUT FILM, THAT IS POSSIBLY THE HIGHEST FORM OF ARTMAKING?

J: HISTORICALLY FILM LENDS ITSELF TO LARGE AUDIENCES. AS AN ART PRACTICE IT IS MORE ACCESSIBLE AND THE MEDIUM ITSELF GIVES MORE LANGUAGE FOR CONVERSATION BETWEEN VIEWER AND THE ART THAN A STATIC PIECE LIKE A PAINTING OR PHOTOGRAPH WOULD. IN THIS WAY, FILM IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF ART. HIGHEST FORM OF ART WITH A LOWERCASE "A".

JUANCY ADORES AND MISSES GOOD CUBAN FOOD AND HIS FAVORITE ICE CREAM IS DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CHIP.

THANKS JUANCY!
